The origin of Jivamukti Yoga lies in the combination of asanas from Hatha Yoga and modern approaches to life. Sharon Gannon and David Life integrated music, philosophy and ethics in the 1980s to create a holistic approach alongside the purely physical practice of yoga. The word "Jivamukti" means "liberation of the self" and thus refers to the goal of liberating the practicing yogi(ni)s not only physically but also mentally.
