Yoga style: Ashtanga Yoga

Short description Ashtanga Yoga

Is a dynamic, powerful yoga tradition with a precisely coordinated sequence of asanas that is synchronized with a specific breathing technique (Ujjayyi) (Vinyasa principle). Each position flows smoothly into the next. Independent practice requires and promotes self-discipline, the ability to concentrate and mindfulness.

Special feature of Ashtanga Yoga

Each student practices a sequence of asanas specified by the teacher (1st, 2nd or 3rd series) at their own pace. He/she works methodically forward within the Ashtanga series, receives adjustments and explanations from the yoga teacher, as well as, if necessary, variants for practicing until he/she is ready for the actual asana. Concentration takes place on 3 levels: Asanas (physical exercises), Ujjayi breathing and Bandas (muscle tension of Mula Bandha (pelvic floor) and Uddiyana Bandha (belly button) as well as Drishti (points of focus, such as the tip of the nose, third eye or a part of the body).

Typical content of an Ashtanga yoga class

  • Mantra
  • Sun Salutation A & B
  • Basic positions of the respective series

Roots/Origin

In Mysore (India), Shri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) further developed the yoga style he had adopted from his teacher Shri T. Krishnamacharya and turned it into a series-structured system.

Suitable for whom

Ashtanga Yoga is particularly suitable for lively and energetic people who want to build up their fitness . The dynamic asana sequences require an advanced level of physical fitness, which can be acquired quickly. You “take a breather” in the asanas.

Effort/sweat factor
