Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic, powerful yoga tradition with a precisely coordinated sequence of asanas. These are synchronized with a specific breathing technique (Ujjayyi) . Here we speak of the so-called Vinyasa principle . Each position flows smoothly into the next. Independent practice requires and promotes self-discipline, the ability to concentrate and mindfulness.
Ashtanga Yoga involves performing a predetermined series of different exercises. The energetic intensity within the series steadily increases, reaches a peak and then finally levels off again to end in a state of deep relaxation.
In an Ashtanga yoga course, each student practices the sequence of asanas given by the teacher at their own pace. You work your way forward methodically within the Ashtanga series, receiving adjustments and explanations from the yoga teacher and, if necessary, variants for practicing until you are ready for the actual asana. Concentration takes place on 3 levels: Asanas (physical exercises), Ujjayi breathing and Bandas (muscle tension).
Origin and meaning of Ashtanga Yoga
The name Ashtanga comes from Sanskrit and means “ eight limbs” . It is made up of the components “Ashta” , which means “eight” , and “ anga” , which means “members, parts” . Ashtanga also refers to the eight-part yoga path, which consists of eight basic principles that yogis should follow on their path. You can find out what the eight limbs of yoga stand for here.
Shri K. Pattabhi Jois is considered the founder of modern Ashtanga Yoga. In Mysore (India) he further developed the Vinyasa Flow yoga style that he had adopted from his teacher Shri T. Krishnamacharya and created a system divided into series. Six series of exercises were created, of which the first series is usually taught today.
In this video, Pattabhi Jois teaches the first series himself in 1993.
Target group Ashtanga Yoga (suitable for)
Ashtanga Yoga is considered a very physical, dynamic and demanding yoga style and is therefore particularly suitable for lively and energetic people who want to build up their fitness. The flowing asana sequences require an advanced level of physical fitness. You “take a breather” in the asanas. Of course, the intensity and speed can be constantly trained and increased. Yogis who practice independently and in a disciplined manner with seriousness know the sequences of movements and can ultimately consolidate and further develop their basic practice.
