Street yoga – from cork men and non-profits

Street yoga – from cork men and non-profits - FindeDeinYoga.org

If you follow the yoga posts on Instagram, then yoga exercises are now being done everywhere: the bike at sunset on the beach, the lotus position while breastfeeding the child, the free hand in mudra; the tree at a lively market in Thailand. The creativity of self-dramatization is limitless. And now also street yoga - the image search shows people doing yoga on traffic islands, subway entrances, bridges and shopping arcades, yawn, seen it all.

Street yoga – asanas on concrete and asphalt?

But none of this is street yoga in the true sense. The Streetyoga organization is based in Seattle, where trainers are trained to integrate yoga and mindfulness into their work with young people with negative childhood experiences and their families or carers. Streetyoga's vision is a world where everyone has access to yoga. (Yeah!) The knowledge of yoga, conscious breathing and compassionate communication can then be used to heal past traumas and for each person to create a life for themselves that is inspired and joyful. (Double Yeah!!) A really great initiative that there should be more of.

Street yoga in Germany

In Germany in 2014 there was a non-profit street yoga organization run by Laura Hirch, which unfortunately became quiet again. There are non-profit associations and organizations, such as Yoga for All and Community Yoga, which work to ensure that everyone can have access to yoga. However, the term street yoga is not used here.

Cork figures in yoga poses in the streets of Berlin

In Berlin, street yoga means the small, self-made cork figures that you can often see on street signs or on walls in the Berlin cityscape. The cork figures appear in a variety of yoga poses, from handstands to triangle gymnastics. If you ever discover one of the funny street yogis, then they bring “joy and happiness”, or at least that’s what the inventor wanted.
