Checklist: How to find the right yoga retreat for you

You've made your decision: it's going to be a yoga retreat . What served as a general guideline in our comparison between retreats and yoga holidays now becomes concrete: with hundreds of offers in different countries, styles, and price ranges, it's worth taking a second, closer look before you book.

Here is our checklist of points that we repeatedly notice when retreat experiences do not meet expectations.

1. Clarify yoga style and level

Not every style is equally well-suited to a multi-day retreat. Yin Yoga or Hatha Yoga, for example, are well-suited to calmer, more contemplative retreats, while more dynamic styles like Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga tend to be more active. Also, pay attention to the level designation: "Suitable for all levels" doesn't automatically mean that every session is relaxing for beginners – if in doubt, ask the instructor.

2. Who manages the practice?

Take a look at the teachers' profiles: their training, experience, and personal yoga background. Some retreats focus on a single teacher, while others have several rotating instructors. Both have advantages and disadvantages – what's important is that the teaching style suits you, not just the style of yoga itself.

3. Accommodation and meals

A retreat center , a hotel with a retreat program, or a finca – the range is vast. Clarify beforehand: single or shared rooms? Is food included in the price, and does it suit your needs (vegan, vegetarian, allergies)? Especially with communal meals, it's worth taking a look at the offer description or asking a quick question.

4. Realistically assess program density

How many sessions are scheduled per day, and how much free time is left in between? Those booking a retreat for the first time often underestimate how intense a tightly structured daily routine can be over several days. A look at the daily schedule provides more reassurance than just the program description.

5. Costs and services in detail

Is travel included in the price? Are excursions, massages, or materials like yoga mats included? And what are the cancellation policies if something unexpected comes up? These details are rarely prominently displayed, but it's worth reading them carefully before booking.

6. Check ratings and reviews

On our portal, you can view existing reviews for many offers. Pay less attention to the star rating alone and more to specific details: What was the actual group size, how experienced did the instructors seem, were there any surprises with the accommodation?

Discover retreats

Our yoga retreat search lets you filter by yoga style, dates, and country – including Germany , Austria , Greece , and Spain . If you'd like to stay flexible on price, you'll also find current special offers .

It depends on the specific retreat. Many retreats are explicitly suitable for beginners, while others require a certain level of practice. The level indicated in the offer provides a good starting point; if in doubt, it's worth contacting the organizer directly.

This varies considerably between providers – from one session per day to several sessions plus meditation. A look at the specific daily schedule of the program reveals more than the general description.

That's precisely why it's worth taking a look at the cancellation policy before booking. It varies from provider to provider and is usually included in the detailed offer description.

A retreat is an investment of time, money and expectations – with the right preparation, the chances are good that it will be exactly the break you envision.
