Yoga associations introduce themselves: BDY #1

Yoga associations introduce themselves: BDY #1 - FindeDeinYoga.org

For the series “Yoga associations introduce themselves” we asked all the yoga associations we know to briefly introduce themselves using a few questions. We would like to give all associations a voice in order to give prospective yoga teachers guidance in choosing the right training, but also for those interested in yoga in choosing their yoga teacher. The first response we received was from the Professional Association of Yoga Teachers in Germany (BDY).

What is the BDY and how is it organized?

The Professional Association of Yoga Teachers in Germany (BDY) is an association with an office in Göttingen. The most important body is the annual general meeting. There, the chairperson of the board, the first and second deputy board members and the advisory specialist groups are elected and joint decisions are made.

When and why was the BDY founded?

The BDY was founded in Berlin in 1967. The aim of the BDY was to create a professional organization that represents the interests of yoga teachers, particularly towards politicians and those involved in the health care system. In addition, yoga teachers should be given the opportunity to share experiences and exchange ideas. Another important topic in the BDY then as now is the quality of yoga teaching and yoga teacher training.

How can you become a member of BDY?

Yoga teachers can become members of the BDY regardless of tradition or style, but only if they have completed either a BDY yoga teaching training or another yoga teaching training course of at least two years with at least 500 teaching units that meets the BDY training standards. All members undertake to comply with the professional ethics guidelines and to undergo regular further training. The BDY currently has around 4,700 members.

What service do you offer your members?

The BDY offers its members telephone advice on operational and legal issues, certification with the Central Prevention Testing Center (ZPP) and starting a business. Our specialist magazine German Yoga Forum, which is included in the membership fee, appears six times a year. As part of group insurance, we can offer our members professional liability insurance for just 15.50 euros per year. Members can attend BDY’s continuing education seminars at a reduced price.

From the BDY’s perspective, what is a professional yoga teaching training?

Yoga is a holistic exercise path that sees the development of a personality of integrity through the development of human abilities as an essential goal. The training content and goals should therefore reflect both the physiological and philosophical-psychological facets of yoga. Teaching practice should also be part of the scope of training, because you need your own practical experience in order to teach this way of training appropriately and in a participant-oriented manner.

What should aspiring yoga teachers consider when choosing the right training?

The scope, subjects and content of the training should ensure the knowledge and competence required to practice yoga teaching. The lecturers should have in-depth knowledge of their specialist areas and many years of practical experience. And the training should give time for your own development path and its orientation should correspond to the preferences of the aspiring yoga teacher.

What should those interested in yoga consider when choosing their yoga teacher?

Anyone interested in yoga should find out in advance whether the yoga teacher has completed in-depth yoga teaching training. After a trial lesson or after some time in class, you should ask yourself whether you feel well supported by the yoga teacher and whether your personality is respected and whether he or she respects your possibilities and limitations. The personal charisma of the yoga teacher should also convince him or her.
