Do you know that feeling when a yoga class completely transforms not only your body but also your mood? That's exactly the promise of Jivamukti Yoga – a style that weaves together movement, sound, and a clear attitude towards life.

The roots of Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga was developed in New York in the early 1980s by Sharon Gannon and David Life . Their idea was to understand yoga as a holistic way of life, not just as a physical exercise. The name "Jivamukti" comes from Sanskrit and roughly translates to "liberation in life." The style also arrived in Germany relatively early – Munich remains one of the places where Jivamukti has become particularly well established.

The five principles

Every Jivamukti hour rests on five pillars:

  • Ahimsa – non-violence towards oneself and other living beings
  • Bhakti – devotion, often expressed through mantra chanting
  • Nada – Music and sound as part of the practice
  • Dhyana – Meditation
  • Shastra – the study of yogic scriptures

These principles ensure that a Jivamukti class feels different from a classic Vinyasa or Hatha class: physically demanding, but with a clear view beyond the mat.

What happens during a Jivamukti lesson?

A typical class features a flowing sequence of asanas , often set to music – from calming sounds to driving beats, depending on the teacher. Interspersed are phases of mantra chanting and meditation . Those attending a class for the first time should be reasonably fit, but no prior experience is necessary.
