Show favorites listAshtanga Yoga is a dynamic and powerful yoga tradition with a precisely coordinated sequence of asanas synchronized with a specific breathing technique ( Ujjayi ) – the so-called Vinyasa principle . Each pose flows seamlessly into the next. Independent practice requires and fosters self-discipline, concentration, and mindfulness .
Each student practices a sequence—the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd series —at their own pace, guided by the teacher. They progress methodically through the Ashtanga series, receiving individual adjustments and explanations, as well as variations for practice if needed, until they are ready for the actual asana. Concentration is maintained on three levels: asanas (physical postures), Ujjayi breathing and bandhas (muscular tension of Mula Bandha at the pelvic floor and Uddiyana Bandha at the navel), and Drishti (fixed focal points such as the tip of the nose, the third eye, or a body part).
Shri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915–2009) further developed the style of yoga he had inherited from his teacher Shri T. Krishnamacharya in Mysore (India) and turned it into a system structured into series .
Ashtanga Yoga is particularly suitable for people who appreciate a clear structure and physical challenge and are willing to engage with their practice regularly and with discipline. Beginners are also welcome – the structure of the sequences allows for a gradual approach to more demanding postures.
Here you can specifically search for online yoga courses , courses subsidized by health insurance companies , or courses for companies with this style of yoga.

Vinyasa Yoga is inspired by Ashtanga, but it doesn't follow a fixed sequence – teachers tailor the flow individually. In contrast , Ashtanga Yoga involves practicing a clearly defined, always the same series of asanas , which offers more structure but less variety.
In the Mysore style – named after the Indian city where Ashtanga originated – each participant practices the series at their own pace, while the teacher moves around the room individually, offering adjustments . This differs from a classically led group class, where everyone practices together at the same pace.
Ashtanga Yoga is one of the more physically demanding yoga styles, as the fixed series is practiced continuously and at a fast pace. However, the gradual structure of the series allows even beginners to slowly work their way up to the demands.
No, especially at the beginning you usually only practice part of the first series . With growing experience and in consultation with your teacher, you gradually expand your practice to include further asanas and series.
