AcroYoga in a nutshell

Short description

AcroYoga combines the wisdom of yoga, the loving benevolence of Thai massage and the dynamic energy of acrobatics. The practice takes place in groups of 2 or 3 people, whose members take turns supporting and guiding each other in order to practice therapeutic flying.

Special feature of AcroYoga

It is primarily practiced in trios consisting of “base/basis” (lower person), “flyer/aviator” (upper person) and “spotter/assistant”. The roles are not fixed and are always changed so that you can physically try out each role. The “base” carries and moves another person safely on their feet and hands. The “flyer” (top person) enjoys the feeling of floating. The “spotter” is there like a guardian angel with hands-on attention to “base” and “flyer” to enable safe “high-altitude flights”. AcroYoga sees itself as a practice of giving and taking, giving and receiving touch.

Typical content of an AcroYoga class

• Warming up with yoga and/or partner exercises and movement games
• Various practical exercises in trios “Base/Base” (lower person), “Flyer/Flieger” (upper person) and “Spotter/Assistance”
• Finished off with a short, guided Thai massage

Roots/Origin

AcroYoga was founded in 2003 by Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer in California (USA) and has since touched and inspired several hundred thousand people worldwide. The practice was first called "Contact-Acro" and emerged spontaneously in 2003 from an encounter between therapeutic flying and a handstand between Jenny and Jason. They have called their style “AcroYoga” since 2005 and have been offering yoga teacher training since 2006. The term AcroYoga is legally protected as a registered trademark and may only be used by certified teachers. Offers that are similar in content are therefore also called “Yoga & Acrobatics”, “Flying Yoga”, “Yoga & Fly” and others in German-speaking countries.
